  • Kawasaki Shozo – founded Kawasaki Heavy Industries at age 59
  • Amadeo Giannini – founded Bank of America at age 60
  • Charles Flint – started IBM at age 61
  • Wally Blume – started Denali Flavors at age 62
  • Col. Harlan Sanders – started KFC at age 65
  • Jeanne Dowell – co-founded Green Buddha Clothing at age 80

Lesson 2: People Who Enjoyed Their First Success After Age 50

  • Raymond Chandler – first novel was published at age 51
  • Julia Child – began her PBS cooking show at age 51
  • Kathryn Joosten – Emmy winner started her acting career at age 56
  • Frank McCourt – Pulitzer Prize winner started writing at age 64
  • Oscar Swahn – won Olympic gold at age 64, Olympic silver at age 72
  • Laura Ingalls Wilder – published her first novel at age 65
  • Peter Mark Roget – published the first Roget’s Thesaurus at age 70
  • Harriet Doerr – National Book Award winner was first published at age 74
  • Norman Maclean – published his only novel A River Runs Through It at age 74
  • Grandma Moses – painted her first canvas at age 76

These examples make it clear that age is no barrier to starting a business or enjoying success later in life. And think of the thousands of others over 50 who were successful on a smaller scale without the fame. So, yes you CAN do this!
